Architecture Matters 2024

Crisis vs. Crisis

How can we distribute the costs of green transformation fairly? What new construction options align with climate realities? Is it enough to retrofit existing buildings to solve the housing crisis? Which standards need simplifying? Amid these complex upheavals, how can we tackle social and ecological challenges as interlinked aspects? Does solving one crisis risk creating another?

With “Architecture Matters 2024 – Crisis vs. Crisis”, we aim to have an honest discussion on current conflicting priorities and chart a path for workable solutions to shape the future of construction. We combine big-picture thinking with deep dives into key themes: capital markets, building standards, and radical thinking – new ideas from other places.

Less frontal, more interaction, and direct exchange: This year’s programme offers a mix of main stage presentations and discussion rounds, a networking lunch, and focus sessions featuring keynote speeches and small group discussions.

“Humanity must now learn to live with the loss of established truths.” Linus Neumann

Digitalization – a buzzword frequently touted as a solution, and not just since the current crisis in the construction industry. How does Germany fare compared to other nations in digitizing its economy, society, and administration? Can the 16 different state building regulations coexist with streamlined digital planning and approval processes? Furthermore, how vulnerable is our critical urban infrastructure in the face of hybrid warfare?

As an IT security consultant, Linus Neumann is enlisted by international companies and critical infrastructure operators to hack their systems and eliminate security vulnerabilities. His work often garners public attention, such as when he and colleagues exposed vulnerabilities in De-Mail, mobile networks, and voting software used to evaluate federal election results. 16 May 2024: Crisis vs. Crisis – Opening Keynotes & Discussion

How can we distribute the costs of green transformation fairly? What new construction options align with climate realities? Is it enough to retrofit existing buildings to solve the housing crisis? Which standards need simplifying? …

Recent months have seen a dramatic shift in the financial landscape of the property market. Construction costs have soared, making affordable housing in urban centres increasingly scarce. At the same time, the urgency of climate change is prompting many cities to set ambitious environmental goals. Financing criteria and real estate valuations are also shifting.

Followed by our networking lunch.

16 May 2024: Focus Session

The Focus Session provides thought-provoking inputs and intimate group discussions. Each session offers a space to explore topics in-depth and exchange ideas directly: How are you navigating the crisis? What is your vision for future construction? What do you expect or want from others in the industry?

Places for each Focus Session are limited and will be allocated after ticket purchase. Early registration is recommended.

House of Communication

Focus 1: Capital Markets
Focus 2: Building Standards
Focus 3: Radical Thinking – New ideas from other places
Focus 4: Reimagine the Future! Simple – Sustainable – Digital
Focus 5: Speed Dating

Focus Session 1:
Capital Markets – Stranded assets and fair distribution of transformation costs

How do we calculate the future value of property? What characteristics do projects need to secure financing in the future? Do we need to develop new financing methods for housing alongside existing ones? Stranded assets: To what standards do we refurbish or rebuild? Who bears what costs, and how do we share them fairly? Do the funding programmes match the investment objectives? What and where are investments currently being made, and where are the growth markets?

Input and discussion with, among others:
_Clarissa Alfrink, UNStudio
_Jens Böhnlein, Commerz Real
_Alexander Möll, Hines
_Thomas Rehn, Director Local Building Commission City of Munich

moderation: Jan Friedrich, Bauwelt

Focus Session 2:
Building Standards – What can we afford?

Where are our standards too high, making construction too expensive? How does climate-resilient design affect construction costs? Where exactly must we take action to enable affordable housing (new buildings and conversions)? Simple building – why has it not been implemented on a large scale? How is it being successfully implemented in other countries? What is the responsibility of the municipality, and what is the responsibility of the state or federal government?

input and discussion with, among others:
_Peter Haimerl, Peter Haimerl . Architektur
_Felix Lukasch, ARGENTA
_Elisabeth Merk, Planning Director City of Munich
_Michael Reiß, bema Gruppe

moderation:
_Matthias Alexander, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung
_Nadin Heinich

guests include:
_David Christmann, UBM Development
_Ingrid Simet, Ministerial Director Bavarian State Ministry of Construction

Focus Session 3:
Radical Thinking – New ideas from other places

Where are innovations being implemented – where is the city of the future already being lived? In this session we will discuss tangible solutions: With 3XN and their think tank GXN, we will focus on circular construction – on research approaches and their implementation in different countries around the world. What is possible, where and how? With Space&Matter, we take a broader view: If we tackle social and ecological challenges as interlinked aspects, at what points do we need to rethink the system, financing, ownership, responsibility? What does this mean for the interaction between architects, project developers and future residents? How can we take pilot projects to scale?

input and discussion with, among others:
_Sascha Glasl, Space&Matter
_Kåre Stokholm Poulsgaard, 3XN (GXN)
_Christian Veddeler, 3XN

moderation:
_Christian Meister, Hines
_Mathieu Wellner

This Focus Session will be held in English.

Focus Session 4:
Reimagine the Future! Simple – Sustainable – Digital

Roundtable with Doelker&

Digital tools, robotics, and AI are rapidly advancing. How are these technologies being integrated into everyday planning and construction processes? How can technology help to significantly reduce the construction and real estate sector’s carbon footprint?

Specifically, GIS systems already collect vast amounts of data – How can municipalities make this data more readily available and usable? Digital twins and BIM are state-of-the-art; where can they facilitate informed decision-making for necessary, sustainable changes? And what roles do modular construction and building type E play in making building simpler, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly?

An interdisciplinary roundtable combining planning, construction, management, research, and administration perspectives.

With contributions by:
_Anne Niemann, Professor at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences | “Building – Simple – Ecolocical”
_Michael Willimek, Managing Director Doelker& | “Building – Simple – Digital”

moderation: Frank Kaltenbach, Detail

Guests include:
_Elisabeth Endres, Professor of Building Technology, TU Braunschweig
_Rainer Post, Architect BDA, doranth post architekten, Member of the Board of the Bavarian Chamber of Architects
